This historic property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its unusually intact early features (including much feather edge boarding, and the rear double bake ovens) and its almost unchanged country setting (country road, lots of stonewalls, no other houses in sight).
The house was built as an end-chimney 2 1/2 story house c. 1741 by Timothy Lester, added onto soon thereafter and added onto again in the late 18th Century. John Walton, reknowned early American antiques dealer, completely and carefully restored the house in the 1960's. Updates and repairs would be good investments.
The setting is special. The Waltons donated a 23 acre meadow across the street to Avalonia Land Concervancy: that view will be protected forever. Adjoining the northern boundary of the 5 acre houselot, a 3.6 acre parcel has been donated to Avalonia as well. The houselot contains an early "chaise house", an inground pool, and an organic garden.
